I stopped in Books of Wonder to drop by some pre-publication copies of Secret Speakers when I was in New York with my husband last week. In a spirit of 'hope for the best, but prepare for the worst,' I walked in with visions of having a delightful chat with Peter Glassman, whom I had emailed. Of course he would set aside a cozy spot of time to visit, just for me. I was sure of it, at least on the hope for the best end of it.
As it turns out, he had left that morning for two warm weeks in California. Amelia, a very nice girl at the front counter, asked the buyer if she would meet with me. The buyer was, "buried in work" at her desk, which is Greek for the fact that I'm an unknown author, so why give me the time of day? But 'yes' I could leave the copies. So I signed one for Amelia and left one for the buyer. I did it. And I bought myself a signed copy of Laini Taylor's Lips Touch. Little by little the bird makes it's nest, as the French say. I added one more twig, and for me it was well worth the flight to put it in place. Tweet, tweet.
That's so frustrating. You've been doing so much to get your book out. I'm proud of you for all the work you're doing, though, and I know you're book will be a huge success. I can't wait to read it! I just need more free time from school! :)
I'm very glad that I had a chance to see you last night. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to our lunch together when we both get the time and energy. ;)
